8/5-19 Linum International Arts Festival, Budapest, Hungary

Linum Nemz. Művészeti Fesztivál

International Arts Festival

Budapest, Hungary

August 5 - 19, 2001

First Trip to Hungary a Success

PAFDC participated in the second annual Linum Festival in Hungary in August, 2001.  The Festival took place in a picturesque village near Budapest, and included productions by individual and group artists as well as gallery exhibits and musical performances.

Part of the Festival was reserved for the presentation of traditional folk dance and song, and PAFDC was delighted to share the stage with Portuguese, French, Transylvanian, Greek and Hungarian dance companies.   PAFDC performed lively folk dances from Kurpie and Opoczno, including the fiery oberek opoczynski.  In their elegant Kontusz costumes PAFDC performed a mazur from Stanislaw Moniuszko's opera Halka.  The Kontusz costumes, traditionally worn by rich landowners and by members of the royal court, captured the imagination of the Hungarian audience and were the hit of the Festival.  As the only Polish folk dance group at  the Festival, PAFDC received tremendous applause and many accolades from the audience, from local television, and from the organizers of the Festival.

PAFDC also had the opportunity to learn traditional folk dances from some of the other groups at the Festival, and reciprocated by teaching them the basic steps of  the Krakowiak, one of Poland's best-known national dances.
