A
Presentation of Polish Folk Fashion
The
Polish American Folk Dance Company (PAFDC) will present its rich treasury
of Polish folk fashions on Sunday, May 20th at 12:30 pm at St.
Stanislaus School Auditorium in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Discover the beauty of Polish folk fashion, or “Moda Ludowa”,
and share a pleasant afternoon of Polish culture with the dance company
who has entertained audiences and shared its treasury of costumes with
audiences in the United States, Canada and Poland for over 63 years. The
Polish American Folk Dance Company has been an integral part of the
Brooklyn community and is proud to present its extensive wardrobe to the
audiences who have supported their efforts to preserve Polish folk
tradition. This will be an
extraordinary opportunity to view this extensive wardrobe of Polish
ethnographic folk art up close in an intimate setting.
PAFDC’s
passion for authenticity and the preservation of Polish folklore in the
United States has resulted in a repository of over 600 individual costumes
from 23 different regions of Poland, one of the largest collections
outside of Poland. From the
colorful woolen striped costumes of the Lowicz region to the elaborately
sequinced Cracovian corsets best known as the national costume of Poland,
each costume piece represents the history of Poland. Its
rich wardrobe has built PAFDC’s reputation of being one of the premiere
Polish folk dance groups in the world.
Costumes have been handcrafted in Poland and by talented volunteers
of the Company. Members of the Company have held demonstrations of
handicrafts, embroidery patterns and costumes at such prestigious venues
as the Museum of Natural History in New York.
In 1979, PAFDC received its highest honor to date when the Polish
government presented Mr. Stanley J. Pelc, former Artistic Director, with
the Oskar Kolberg Award for his work in researching and presenting
Polish folk culture to American audiences. To
make the afternoon even more enjoyable, there will be a presentation of
dances by the performing troupe and an inspiring performance by
up-and-coming dancers. Hot food will be available as well as traditional Polish
music. Come
see the extensive collection of Polish folk costumes that PAFDC has
proudly put together. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in advance or at the
door. For further
information, please call Director Daniel Dziadura at 917-952-9344 or send
email at info@pafdc.org.
